It just about 10 months since Maruti revealed the brand new KB series engines. K series engine aims at improving power and mileage of installed cars with reduction in cost and pollution. The Bharath stage 4 standards will come into effect in all major Indian cities from 2010 April. Maruti K series engines are already equipped to be compatible with this standard. Until now we have Maruti Suzuki A-star, Maruti Suzuki Ritz and the new Estilo, which are shipping with a K series engine. There are two present variants of K series engine namely K10 and K12. K10 is the most basic k series engine used in A-star and Estilo 2009. The same engine K10 engine will be available in next generation Alto arriving at the end of this year. Maruti Ritz uses KB12, the second generation k series engine that produces more power. Maruti Suzuki manufactures K series engine from their Gurgaon plant. So far, they have shipped more than 100,000 KB-Series cars in 10 months.

The k series engine is originally a modification of Fiat’s world renowned multijet engine. Different manufactures including Maruti Suzuki, Tata, Chevrolet, and others are customizing this engine and making their own versions depending upon the car design.
Maruti K series K10 A-star review:
The K10 engine used in Maruti A-star and Estilo is light in weight, and has great control on emissions and provides a mileage near 19 kmpl. It’s a three cylinder 12 valve 998 cc engine that outputs 67ps at 6200 rpm and a maximum torque of 90 nm at 3500 rpm. The K10 engine is constructed using aluminum, and that account for light weight and smooth operation. Another advantage of K series engine is that it produces less noise and vibrations.
Maruti K series K12 Estilo and Ritz review:
K12 engine in Ritz is the second generation K series. This 1.2L petrol engine is slightly larger and powerful. 1197 cc 4 cylinder K12 engine produce 85ps at 6000 rpm and torque 133 nm at 4500 rpm. This second series of KB engine offers a mileage near 18 kmpl. Second generation K series engine promises less operating cost, vibrations, improved spark plug life, reduced oil change and better driving comfort.
Update: The K series engine is now available in Maruti Swift 2010, Wagon R 2010 and Alto K10 models.
Can we expect a reduction in the price of the Swift petrol?
The Indian Government gives excise benefits to petrol cars having engine capacity less than 1200cc. So that will amount to 4% excise duty reduction on the Swift petrol, the Swift diesel already gets this benefit. Can we expect a reduction in the price of the Swift petrol? Your guess is as good as ours
I am using A Star for the past 6 months. mileage is 19 kmpl. car is easy to drive and my family loves to for for a long drive in A Star as it got comfortable seats. No engine noise and steering is giving good feedback. go for A Star, its practical and good for long years!

why not Maruthi go in for hybrid or a micro hybrid in the second gen k series engine.
Maruti engineers have tested several times and finally they fillted th K!0 series engine to their
cars. As I given infromation that oil changing and maintnenace will be aftter 10000 kms compare to previous models at 5000 kms. Fuel efficiencity also getting better. In conclusion
the K series engines are good than previous models also, meet the latest B IV comliants.

Guys, please get your facts right. You say the K-Series is a modification of Fiat’s multijet ! For Heaven’s sake the K-series is a petrol engine and the multijet is a diesel. How can their designs be similar??
Besides, Suzuki only has the right to manufacture the multijet and they cannot make any modifications on the engine.
CAUTION! CAUTION! CAUTION! CAUTION!
